SPEAKER

Definition : the narrator of the poem: the person who's telling the story. It could be the 1st person as the main character in a poem. It's not always the poet who's speaking in a poem.

At the Seaside

When I was down beside the sea A wooden spade they gave to me To dig the sandy shore. My holes were empty like a cup, In every hole the sea came up, Till it could come no more. This poem was written for children although Robert is a grown up guy. Significance : The speaker helps the readers to connect and experience to the poem in different perspective.
